Dow Jones gives Newmont sustainability boost - Tuesday 18th September 2007

Newmont Mining today (September 18th) issued a press release announcing its selection for listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index-World.

Standing up well against criteria such as transparency, corporate governance, environmental management and community relations, the selection makes Newmont the first gold mining company to enter the index.

Dow Jones' Sustainability Index carries out independent evaluation of companies' long-term environmental and social performance, subsequently identifying the top ten performers in 58 different industry groups.

Upon selection, Newmont president and chief executive Richard O'Brien said that a will to provide everyone involved with the company with actions to be proud of had motivated the improvement in standards which merited inclusion in the Index.

"Our vision to become the gold company of choice for our employees, shareholders and host communities requires that we continually improve our performance," he said.

Newmont was one of the pluckiest mining shares last night, up 11 cents at $5.50 in overnight trading on Wall Street, while Emperor Mines was down 0.2 cents on news of its agreement to merge with Intrepid Mines.
